Picture Saints

We are all called to personal holiness. This idea was the subject of many arguments during my mid-teens. During my twenties I realised that sometimes we look in the wrong places for an image or pattern to follow. We imagine that to be holy we must look like the saints in the holy pictures we keep in our missals. An enigmatic smile, hands held just so, a life in pastels. We do things that we know make us look like this two dimensional holy ideal we have.

The reality of a holy life is so different. Holiness is closeness to God, a loving personal relationship with Him. Like human marriage, this is not one long fairytale relationship but is made up of individual acts, small choices, perhaps even more so than great ones, made with the beloved in mind. Very often doing the small tasks we must do even when we don’t really feel like it.

These things don’t happen magically… we have to make the magic happen.
